women starting a businessBusiness By the Numbers

A womanâs Perspective on Starting and Building a Small Business

By Ashley Laine

Starting a small business as a woman is difficult yet I believe easier. There are a couple of reasons for this. The main one is that we do not have a problem asking for directions. We also enjoy supporting each other as women. Toward that end, there are two things that every business needs or it will fail every time.

Do you remember those paintings that had the numbers that told you where to paint each color and at the end you looked like a master painter? There were two components to those pictures that were necessary to be successful with them. The first is the color code that tells you what color goes with what number and then you have the picture that has the numbers where they colors need to go.

You may be asking yourself, what this has to do with starting my own business? Actually, you might be surprised. Remember those two things I was talking about that you must have to start and build a successful business? Those two things are Tactics and Strategy. Most people just have one of those things going in to a business startup.

Tactics:

Business tactics are what most people bring to the table when they are thinking of going into a business. They are a Hair Stylist and now want to open a salon. Well they have the tactics of cutting hair down so will they be successful in starting a salon? Maybe, it all depends. There are quite a bit of non-tactical items that go into building a business. So what can you do? Work on your strategy.

Strategy:

Strategy is an easy way to say your plan to succeed in your business. Yet strategy is so much more. That is why a Franchise is often the best way to go with tacticians. The Franchisor brings the strategy to the table. If you do not have the capital to get a franchise then I suggest meeting with S.C.O.R.E or a similar group to help you create a plan for your business.

If you have the know how and a good plan for success then you are over half way to being successful in business. The rest is executing your plan and being flexible when life comes at you. Find some groups that can support you and answer your questions along the way, and Above all have fun.
